To be an effective leader of any team, you must first take responsibility for yourself. Leading yourself, on the farm or in any other part of life, is a necessary step to being ready and able to lead others, says Mark Gasparotto.
Gasparrot, founder of the Gasparrot Group and a former Canadian Army commander, says future leaders need to learn and understand key aspects of themselves, including the “why” of what they do, how they think and process information, how they take action and execute tasks.
Sure, some jobs and roles require leadership, but Gasparotto’s point goes beyond that: everyone has the ability to demonstrate leadership, even if it might look different in different situations.
Gasparotto talks about how a tough lesson he experienced early in his career inspired him to want to learn more about leadership, and how humility, open-mindedness and a willingness to accept criticism make for a great leader.
