While soils in parts of Western Canada have not yet fully recovered and parts of Ontario are still too wet for planting, good moisture overall in April and May has given farmers and ranchers a good start to the 2024 growing season.
Looking ahead to June, July and August, Matt Makens of Makens Weather says there’s good news in store for parts of the Canadian Plains and the Dakotas: July could be fairly dry, but early moisture will play a key role in sustaining crop yields this time of year.
Ontario had a wet spring planting season, but Makens expects precipitation to return to normal over the next few weeks, with the wet season arriving by mid-July.
The outlook for parts of the U.S. is less bright, with severe drought predicted for Kansas, Colorado, Utah and West Texas. The Dakotas, Nebraska, Minnesota and Iowa are expected to have much better weather, resulting in very good growing conditions.
