To commemorate World Environment Day, Global Wellness Day and World Oceans Day, Sun Siyam Iru Fushi and Siyam World Maldives have collaborated to organise a week of environmental, sustainability and education activities from 1 to 8 June 2024. Marking the first ever Environmental and Green Week for both resorts, the week-long event showcased their sustainable practices and marine conservation efforts. Guests and staff at both resorts participated in a series of meaningful activities aimed at protecting the Maldives’ pristine environment. This marks an annual event symbolising their ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability.
Highlights from this week include:
Sun Siyam Iru Fushi: Environment and Ocean Week kicked off on June 6th, with children from Koamas Kids Club participating in educational activities and presentations focusing on nature, climate change and current global challenges. These sessions also aimed to stimulate children’s curiosity about marine life. The day concluded with an evening nature walk and an educational presentation on marine conservation. On June 7th, a major clean-up of the beach, lagoon and house reef took place, with the help of guests and staff to increase the resort’s natural beauty and reduce marine debris. The week concluded on June 8th, Global Wellness Day and World Oceans Day, with a sunrise yoga session and aqua aerobics, followed by an Oceans Day-themed management cocktail and a “Pledge to the Earth” tree planting ceremony.
Siyam World: Green Week kicked off on 1 June with a Children’s Day celebration in collaboration with Noonu Kudafari Council and Schools. On 3 June, an educational dive with marine biologists at Dive Temple taught guests about coral reef health and survey methods. On 4 June, an information session on house reef conservation efforts was held at Kuruhivaru. Activities on 5 June included a harbour clean-up and tree planting at Dive Temple in celebration of World Environment Day. On 6 June, guests enjoyed a fascinating house reef snorkelling session led by marine biologists, learning about the various fish and creatures that inhabit the reef. The week concluded on 8 June with an enlightening snorkelling session at Island Pier learning about the local marine ecosystem and a Sea Day celebration at Manadoo.
Additionally, a joint visit to the local island of N. Manadhoo was organised as part of the “Emmen ekee Moodhah” initiative on World Oceans Day on June 8. The event was organised in collaboration with the Maldives Ministry of Fisheries and was attended by island residents from both resorts. The activity provided motivational talks, information sharing and various water sports, scuba diving and snorkelling experiences for the local community to promote environmental awareness and engagement.
Chaminda Upul, Sustainability Project Manager at Sun Siyam Resort, said: “Green Week reflects our unwavering commitment to protecting the Maldives’ unique environment. By engaging our guests and local communities in these activities, we aim to foster a greater understanding and respect for the natural environment. Together, we can ensure that the beauty and biodiversity of our oceans and islands are preserved for future generations.”
