Proper staging is important to understand how to survey and manage corn, including when to apply fertilizer, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides.
This is also important in understanding plant development and how stress factors at different stages affect outcomes such as yield, cob size and kernel weight.
The problem is, there are multiple ways to measure the development stage of corn, and product labels don’t always use the same methods.
For example, there are the V-stage or leaf collar method, leaf cover method, leaf tip method, etc., and some herbicide labels still list plant height in determining staging.
Renate Jochum of PRIDE Seeds appears on Corn School for the first time in this hands-on episode, joining Jeanette Gaultier of BASF and Kelvin Heppner of RealAg to explain each technique, how to accurately assess what stage your corn crop is at, and the pros and cons of each staging approach.
