Nova Maldives has joined World Environment Day with a comprehensive initiative in support of this year’s theme, #GenerationRestoration. Recognizing the vital connection between ‘Land and Life’ and the pivotal role of healthy ecosystems in supporting island communities, the resort will donate 75 coconut trees to its local island, Dhangethi. In addition to this initiative, marine biologists will be giving educational presentations to students and parents from the island’s schools to complement the reforestation efforts.
This donation of coconut trees reflects Nova Maldives’ ongoing commitment to contributing positively to the local community. Coconut trees are native to the island and well suited to the island’s tropical climate, so they will not only enhance the island’s natural charm, but also help balance the ecosystem by restoring vegetation and creating a habitat for local fauna. Furthermore, the tree roots play an important role in soil retention, protecting it from erosive forces during monsoon season and making it more resilient to extreme weather conditions.
Additionally, Nova’s resident marine biologists will educate the community about South Ari Atoll’s marine environment and the important conservation efforts underway. This effort aims to instill a greater understanding and appreciation for the vibrant marine life in future generations. Through community engagement and knowledge sharing on marine conservation, Nova aims to foster a sense of connection and shared responsibility for environmental protection, empowering younger generations to protect the precious natural resources of their home islands.
“World Environment Day is an important opportunity for us to reflect on our relationship with nature and the actions we can take to protect it,” said Abdulla Abu Bakr, General Manager of Nova Maldives. “Through these activities, we aim to create heart-warming experiences that highlight our inseparable connection with the natural world and foster a sense of stewardship within our community.”
These efforts come in addition to many other initiatives Nova undertakes to contribute to the concept of sustainable tourism, including Nova’s popular Coral Cultivation Scheme, which encourages travelers to sponsor the planting of new coral frames on Nova’s house reef. Nova has also leveraged its relationship with the Maldives’ Whale Shark Research Program to keep guests updated on the latest conservation research. Committed to reducing the impact of tourism activities, Nova has also earned the status of Responsible Manta Tour Operator for its strict adherence to industry guidelines and protocols for diving and snorkeling tours.
Located in South Ari Atoll, Nova Maldives is a private eco-friendly hideaway where guests can reconnect with themselves, others and nature in an ambiance of soft luxury. In this enchanting oasis, experience oneness with the ocean and harmonious coexistence with whale sharks and manta rays.
