Atmosphere Foundation, the philanthropic arm of global hospitality company Atmosphere Core, which operates several resorts in the Maldives, will be celebrating Environment Day on Vaikaradhoo Island, HDh.
The Island Council has planned a number of activities in collaboration with the Air Foundation to celebrate Environment Day on June 8th.
Vaikaraddu Council vice-chairman Mohammed Naham said the council, women’s committee and Atmosphere Foundation planted 83 bamboo trees in October last year.
“The bamboo park has already been planted with 13 species of bamboo, including native bamboo. The trees have started to grow big and will soon be home to the largest number of bamboo species on the island,” he said.
Other activities planned on the island include:
- An essay contest open to anyone aged 15 or over.
- Flyer making contest
- Poster Drawing Contest
- Photo Contest
- Bamboo Evening
- Disseminating environmental information through social media
The collaboration with Atmosphere Foundation does not end on Vaikaradhu, as the foundation has underlined its commitment to promoting sustainable environmental initiatives and has committed to supporting the establishment of bamboo parks on four other islands.
Separately, the Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with Atmosphere Foundation, will launch a bamboo planting project across the Maldives in March 2023. The project is in line with the national goal of achieving carbon neutrality. As part of this initiative, Atmosphere Foundation has donated 500 bamboo seedlings to the government.
To ensure maximum impact from the bamboo plantations, Atmosphere Foundation is collaborating with Dr. Bharati Nambi, a renowned Indian agricultural scientist.
