To mark World Oceans Day, we partnered with Ocean Fanatics Maldives to host a successful coral planting event at Reethi Beach Resort. The aim of the event was to educate guests on the importance of coral reefs in our ecosystem and engage them in active conservation efforts. On this day, guests of all ages had the opportunity to take part in a hands-on activity of fastening coral fragments onto specially designed metal structures under the guidance of Ocean Fanatics’ dedicated team. These structures were then installed on the house reef just off the resort’s beautiful Fonimagoodhoo Island. The program enabled guests to learn about coral biology, understand the threats these fragile ecosystems face and why it is important to protect them.
Another member in attendance was Muneeb Mohamed, manager of Ocean Fanatics Dive Centre, who emphasised the importance of the project as coral reefs are “vital for marine biodiversity and coastal protection”. “The survival of coral reefs is one of the keys to the fight against climate change. Every piece of coral we plant today is a thriving reef that has the potential to support marine life for many years.”
The theme of this year’s World Oceans Day is “Accelerating Action for Our Oceans and Climate”, highlighting the need for urgent and aggressive action to protect our oceans from climate change. Coral reefs are crucial in this context, as they are the home of marine biodiversity and act as a natural defense to protect coastlines from erosion and strong currents. Through coral planting, individuals have directly played a role in restoring and increasing the resilience of these ecosystems.
“We are incredibly proud to partner with Ocean Fanatics Maldives on this meaningful event,” said Waruna, Marketing and PR Manager at Reethi Beach Resort. “Not only did our guests take part in an educational activity, they really made a difference to the health of the local coral reef. This initiative aligns perfectly with our company’s philosophy of responsible tourism and environmental conservation. It is heartening to see our guests taking such a hands-on approach to protecting our amazing and diverse underwater paradise for future generations.”
Attendance was mixed – a mix of families, diving enthusiasts and conservationists – reflecting the universal appeal and importance of marine conservation. The event marked an important step towards the resort’s ongoing commitment to protecting and preserving the pristine beauty of the Maldives.
