It won’t be long until the soil is compatible and the planters are rolling into an edible bean field.
About this episode Real Agriculture Edible Beans SchoolChecklist that Hensall Co-op field marketer and edible bean grower Dave Louwagie uses to ensure all systems are working when the conditions are right for dry beans. are sharing.
To kick things off, Louwagie has one simple message. That means “Let’s get organized.” It starts with creating a cropping plan for each variety and determining the number of individuals. “Make sure the planter monitor is programmed and working. Also, if you are planting at variable speed, make sure the seed script is loaded on the planter’s monitor and that it is working and ready. Please make sure it is done.”
Now is also the time to prepare the seeds, Lowagi says. “Get them in the shed early. This reduces pressure on growers and seed suppliers.” Knowing the size of the seeds is another item on the checklist. This allows you to choose the right size plate or disc and vacuum pressure for your planter unit.
Louwagie also recommends growers check their seeds for germination. “A certified number one seed is at least 85 percent. Most of the time, you’ll get results above 90 percent. Knowing the germination score allows you to adjust the population by increasing or decreasing it as needed.”
When it comes to planters, Louwagie highlights important areas of focus for growers. These include leveling the planter, checking the bushings, parallel links and drive system. The disc opener and gauge wheel also require a keen eye to ensure the blade contact dimension is 1.5 to 2.5 inches. This will help ensure a “V” groove instead of a “W”.

Once the planter is ready, Louwagie reminds growers to plant in warm soil if possible. “Ideally, he should observe the beans twice in the same week, once when he puts the seeds into the hopper and once when the beans come out. When this happens, the beans are great, And we’re going to get off to a positive start.” Watch the video below.
